PRP for Hair Loss in Brooklyn

Most people have heard about the “vampire lift” or “vampire facial”, where your own blood is used to restore a youthful, glowing complexion. Well, now there’s a similar treatment for your hair follicles that is used to enhance hair volume. PRP hair restoration provides hope for those struggling with thinning hair.

What is PRP?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) has been proven to stimulate brand new hair growth. Plasma is a part of our blood that’s very rich in nutrients, vitamins, and growth factors that contain dozens of platelets. These platelets are tiny cells that are responsible for healing and tissue repair. Over a series of injections of this PRP, the growth factors can help restore hair growth.

How does PRP for hair restoration work?

Hair follicle growth can slow down or become dormant, and may stop growing hair as we become older. Even the follicles that are continuing to work can become more inefficient with age, and hair thins out.

When platelet-rich plasma is injected where there is hair loss, the platelets are stimulated to release all their nutrients and growth factors.

This triggers the hair follicles to begin growing hair again. As a result, hair appears fuller, thicker, and healthier-looking after several PRP treatments.

What to expect in a PRP hair restoration treatment

A treatment involving blood and needles might sound scary, but don’t worry. It’s extremely natural (since it uses your own blood), safe, and non-invasive. You will meet Dr. Julia Giyaur for your initial consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for this procedure. Most people are; however, patients with certain types of hair loss may not qualify, as different types of hair loss are caused by different things. In addition, the presence of hair follicles is necessary for PRP treatment to work.

Prior to your initial procedure appointment, we may recommend certain at-home treatments to enhance your results. Upon your arrival for your first treatment, we will use a strong anesthetic cream to numb the area. Your blood will be drawn from a vein and processed in a specialized centrifuge. The point of this processing is for us to isolate the part of plasma that contains the highest number of follicle-stimulating nutrients.

After the plasma has been isolated, it will be placed inside of a syringe so that it can be injected into targeted areas of your scalp where hair growth is desired. The injections are very superficial and your skin will be numbed, so any discomfort is very minimal. The area will be iced a little before you leave. Treatment takes about 20 minutes. We normally recommend topical medications to be used in conjunction with your PRP treatment. They are specially formulated hair drops that help to block the damaging effect of hormones on your hair.

After treatment

There is typically no discomfort or bruising after a PRP hair treatment. We recommend washing your hair as you typically would a few hours after treatment. We also recommend that you avoid hair coloring or blow drying for a couple of days after treatment.

Who is a good candidate for PRP hair treatment?

If you’re in the Brooklyn area and PRP for hair loss sounds interesting to you, it may be just right for your needs. Those who are the best candidates for this procedure are those who:

    • Are experiencing hair loss (in particular, androgenetic alopecia)
    • Want to enhance hair volume
    • Are women with hormone-related thinning of hair on top of the head
    • Are in overall good health
    • Understand that results from PRP hair treatment is a gradual process

    Results

Several PRP hair restoration treatments are necessary to start seeing the desired results. The more consistent the treatments are, the better the results will be. Dr. Giyaur recommends one treatment a month for the first 3 to 4 months, and then maintenance treatments every 3 to 6 months. Initially our patients start seeing less hair loss, and then as treatment continues, their hair starts re-growing and becomes fuller and longer. The best way to upkeep the effect and maintain hair regrowth is to continue treatments every few months.
