What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the United States today.

As you age, your skin grows less elastic and more prone to sagging. This can cause both upper and lower eyelid changes that may make you feel unhappy with your appearance.

Sometimes, eyelid sagging can also cause physical discomfort like a feeling of heaviness, inconveniences like difficulty applying eyeshadow, or even serious problems like partially obscured vision.

Upper blepharoplasty corrects hooded or sagging upper eyelids, while lower blepharoplasty corrects the under-eye area, removing bags and dark circles to give you a refreshed, rejuvenated, and youthful look.

What is the blepharoplasty process?

The team performs blepharoplasty in their state-of-the-art procedure room or ambulatory surgery center (ASC). You’ll receive anesthesia such as local lidocaine, oral sedation, or intravenous (IV) sedation.

The procedure involves removing extra skin, fat, and sometimes muscle to reshape your eyelids to a more functional and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The specific approaches are:

Upper blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery conceals tiny incisions in the natural folds of your eyelid. The procedure lifts the upper lids, giving you a more refreshed, open-eyed look.

Lower blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid surgery usually involves an incision inside the lower eyelid, which helps avoid visible scarring. The procedure removes extra fat and skin, creating a smoother and more youthful contour from the lower eye down to the cheekbones.

Blepharoplasty treats under-eye bags and upper lid sagging very effectively, but it may not address issues like tiny creases around the eyes, skin texture issues, or hyperpigmentation. Many patients opt for eyelid lift enhancers like laser skin rejuvenation, dermal fillers, or Botox® to give you the very best results.

What is recovery like after blepharoplasty?

The day of your eyelid surgery, you’ll return home to rest for the remainder of the day. The team recommends applying ice packs gently over the next two days.

You’ll return to Juno Aesthetics to have your stitches removed within one week of your surgery. The team recommends sleeping with your head elevated for the first week, and you should avoid strenuous physical activity for two weeks.

Some swelling and bruising is normal after blepharoplasty. Bruising usually fades after a couple of weeks, and swelling usually subsides in a month or so.

Blepharoplasty can take years off the appearance of your eye area. To learn more, call the nearest Juno Aesthetics office or book your appointment online today.
